This August, Gera-IT attended TechBBQ 2025 in Copenhagen, Scandinavia’s largest tech event. It was our fifth time at this standout event, and everything this year felt bigger and more ambitious than ever.
For the first time, the conference was hosted at the Bella Center Copenhagen, the largest and most modern business venue in the Nordics, a symbolic sign of how quickly the ecosystem is growing.
With 10,000+ participants from 50+ countries (including delegations from China, India, Iceland, and North Africa), the atmosphere was brimming with diversity, global connections, and fresh ideas.
One message came through loud and clear: the Nordic region is bursting with innovation, but sustaining global competitiveness will require bold, decisive action.
Let’s take a closer look at the themes that set the tone at TechBBQ 2025.
Build to Matter
The message of the summit was clear: create technologies that solve real problems.
At Gera-IT, this aligns with our vision — whether in Digital Health, FinTech, or UrbanTech, the products that last are those that improve people’s lives.
AI Everywhere
AI dominated the conversation:
- Traditional chatbots are evolving into specialized AI agents across healthcare, customer success, and more.
- The shift is from experimentation to scalable, real-world use cases.
- The brand-new European AI Summit (powered by Neurons) brought leaders from Meta, Microsoft Denmark, and top researchers to discuss Europe’s role in the AI race.
The takeaway? The Nordics risk falling behind if adoption doesn’t accelerate.
Cybersecurity: Still the Bottleneck
Growth means nothing without security. Mastercard’s CEO shared that since 2018 the company has invested $11B+ in cybersecurity, yet still faces 20+ daily attacks.
For fintech, healthtech, and compliance-heavy industries, this is a warning: robust security is non-negotiable.
UrbanTech & Tech for Good
Sustainability was in the spotlight:
- The UrbanTech cluster had its own stage for the first time, with 25+ startups.
- Panels covered AI in the AEC sector, public-private collaboration, and smart-city case studies from Copenhagen and Helsinki.
- The UrbanTech Pitching Competition highlighted innovation:
🥇 Commu App (Finland) – a neighbor-to-neighbor help platform with 40,000+ users.
🥈 ROICO (Denmark) – Bobby, a collaborative painting robot.
🥉 Simactis (Sweden) – Tapestry, a platform that extracts transport data from aerial images.
Other notable names: Impact Market, Bikekey, 3DCP Group, Envo, Virkley — all showing how UrbanTech is reshaping cities.
Life Science: From Local to Global
The Life Science track explored:
- Scaling Nordic startups internationally.
- Building unicorns within biotech and digital health.
- Transatlantic capital flows between US and Nordic VCs.
A strong theme was the shift “From Compute to Cure” — where AI and biotech innovations are applied directly to healthcare impact.
Mental Health Shined Again
Once again, mental health in entrepreneurship played a big role at TechBBQ.
- From inspiring wellness talks to calming meditation sessions.
- The Longevity Lounge offered a space to recharge and slow down.
These moments of rest proved essential for boosting resilience, creativity, and focus. The community’s commitment to well-being is paving the way for a stronger, healthier entrepreneurial future.
Lovable Buildathon: 30-Minute MVP Challenge
A creative twist came with the Lovable x HackYourFuture Buildathon.
- 25 teams of founders and developers had just 30 minutes to build an MVP using Lovable.
- The top 3 pitched live on stage for a share of €5,000 in prizes (courtesy of Aikido Security) and Lovable credits.
- The energy in the room was electric — showing how fast creativity, collaboration, and the right tools can turn ideas into tangible products.
This challenge captured the essence of TechBBQ: bold innovation, teamwork, and a little healthy competition. It also highlights how founders can quickly and effectively evaluate their ideas. Recently, we explored this in our article How to Test a Startup Idea in just 3 weeks.
Policy Meets Innovation
For the first time, TechBBQ featured a Policy Lounge. Ministers, EU leaders, mayors, founders, and investors debated:
- How Europe can strengthen its global position.
- The balance between regulation and growth.
- Closing the innovation gap and improving capital access.
It was a strong reminder: policy and innovation must move together.
What All This Means for Startups
For founders and scale-ups, the signals from TechBBQ 2025 were clear:
- Adopt AI strategically, but cut the hype.
- Engage investors early, especially angels and cross-border networks.
- Make security a priority in every data-driven process.
- Collaborate internationally, ecosystems are now borderless.
- Stay human-centric, health, wellbeing, and sustainability remain the core drivers.
Final Thoughts
TechBBQ 2025 showed us a Nordic ecosystem that is bold, global, and impact-driven. From UrbanTech and AI to policy debates and mental health, the message was clear: innovation matters most when it improves lives.
At Gera-IT, we’re excited to support founders and scale-ups on this journey — building MVPs, scaling platforms, and integrating AI responsibly.
